We’ve all lost a loved one to death at some point in our lives. Regardless of our age, grief hits us in a variety of ways and at unpredictable times. Statistics show that 1 in 7 children will experience the death of a loved one by the age of 10. There are countless grief support programs in the DFW area for adults, but what about our children?
What is the Program?
It is a free grief support group program for children. The program is based on the GriefWorks curriculum by ChristianWorks, a DFW based non-profit providing counseling and therapy for all ages. They believe restoring a child’s hope after experiencing a death allows them to have healthy future relationships. This program is NOTtherapy or counseling. It is a group designed to bring children and parents of grieving children together for support and comfort.
Who Should Come?
It is designed for children and teens ages 5-18 who are coping with the death of a loved one. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will participate in the adult support group at the same time.
What will I Do?
Each session begins with a free meal, followed by group sessions. Children are divided into age groups with parents having their own group as well. During these sessions the children will participate in activities such as group sharing, arts and crafts, and puppet or drama shows to support them through their grieving process. Each week the groups will focus on a different topic related to grief. Children can share their stories of loss and explore their grief openly, helping them cope with it in a healthy manner. Each group is led by licensed counselors and/or trained facilitators to encourage and support those who want to express feelings of grief.
The parent group will meet at the same time as the children and discuss the unique needs of their grieving children, effective parenting skills, and the needs of parents as they grieve. The program is designed to be a family commitment and help the entire family grieve in a healthy manner.
When is the Program?
Thursday evenings, every other week, beginning in the fall and running through the spring. A complete calendar and specific times will be provided after registration.
Sessions are designed to allow a family to start at any point during the year. If you miss a week or two, no problem! You can jump right in and never feel behind.
Where Does the Program Meet?
The program meets at our building located at: 1409 N. Waterview Dr., Richardson, TX 75080.
What Else Should I Know?
We also offer free childcare for children 4 and under for families attending activities.
