The Story of Jesus in the Psalms

Most people probably think the story of Jesus is more of a New Testament focus. But this story is first told in the Old Testament Scriptures. In this lesson, we'll specifically center our attention on the Psalms. It's powerful to imagine that his story was told in prophecy long before Jesus was incarnate. All the significant parts of the story are there, but we'll highlight the parts that matter the most for our future and hope!

Things Are Going to Get Better

The news today is depressing. Things are going to get worse before they get better. But Psalms 16 has a different message: "Things are going to get better!" In this lesson, we learn how David found the benefits and hope of being in a covenant relationship with God. Christians can have this too! These blessings are both here and in the hereafter!

Blessed is Best

You can have a good, comfortable and even successful life without God, but you can't have the "best life" without God. Psalms 112 is a reminder that there are blessings that come with being obedient to God's word and those blessings will make your life the best it can be.

Praise the Lord

Psalm 111 puts God where he belongs! It reminds us that God deserves our praise. Even though this psalm is poetic, it breaks down nicely into three areas of praise to God, which are highlighted in this lesson.

Worship in the Wilderness

What do you do when your world starts crumbling around you? Perhaps an enemy is out to get you, sickness or death has invaded your family or, even worse, sin has entered your life bringing terrible guilt and consequences. During these times we need to learn the language of lament like David. Psalm 63 is David's lament when Absalom has revolted. In this Psalm, not only does David show us to seek God during difficult times, but he also gives compelling reasons why.

A Place of Praise

The book of Psalms, which literally means "Praise songs," was Israel's songbook of worship. Overall, the content and context of the Psalms remind us their assembly was "A Place of Praise." The same is true today in the Christian assembly. But Psalms also shows us the benefits of gathering with God's people. Beyond the worship given to God, we are blessed by being in the assembly. This lesson explores some of those benefits.
